Out of Respect

I post to this blog each Friday and I have one ready that I have been looking forward to publishing but I have decided to wait a week before I do. It is fun and lighthearted and silly but I don’t think it is appropriate to post just right now.

I live in British Columbia, Canada which is a beautiful part of the world by any measure. This summer has turned out to be the worst wildfire season in memory with now over four hundred wildfires in the province. This past week has seen several fires double in size overnight threatening entire communities and forcing evacuations. We have friends who live in Keremeos, a small village 300k inland from Vancouver. That community has a huge fire bearing down on it. We lived in the Central Okanagan for many decades and overnight fires have destroyed many homes and forced the evacuation of thousands of residents. Similar events are threatening small towns across the province and we are being told worse is yet to come. 2023 will go down in our history as the worst fire season on record. It is catastrophic and for those caught in the middle of it, terrifying. Our thoughts are with our family, our friends and all those being affected.

So with all that being said I think it would be insensitive and disrespectful of me to publish to my blog this week, tone deaf at the very least. I will save it of course and post hopefully next Friday. By then I’m hoping something a wee bit lighthearted and trivial will be welcome.

    1. Thanks Tony. Many of us and our families are coping with homes lost in the Rose Valley area. We are waiting on updates from last night’s activity. Fire crews and support staff are doing a tremendous job saving lives and some structures. We are very thankful for everyone’s support and looking forward to the recovery whenever that maybe. Take care and keep your marvellous stories coming.

Good morning Tony…. Your post this morning was beautiful and in very good taste. Thank you. I live in central Kelowna one block off the highway and although I feel that I’m not in danger, it is very scary to see everything around burning. All roads out of the city are closed at this point. I was supposed to leave here in the morning to get the 2pm ferry to Victoria but that won’t be happening for a few days.

I’ll look forward to your post next week when I’m hopefully in Victoria! Joanne Langevin

    1. Take care I know it’s tough times. My youngest son was just evacuated from Celista. Drove by the fire hall as it burned to the ground …
